This weekend, WFUV is expanding John Platt's long-running folk show "Sunday Supper" to two hours in its Sunday afternoon lineup, from 4-6 p.m., EST. The show will take over the hour vacated by host Bob Sherman, who ended his beloved folk show "Woody's Children" on January 29 after a 54-year run.

"I'm very excited to make the two-hour version of 'Sunday Supper' a 'Super Supper,' says Platt. "I'll be able to dig deeper into new artists and old faves across multiple genres, while continuing to honor the wonderful legacy of 'Woody's Children.'"

Platt, who began "Sunday Supper" as "Sunday Breakfast" in 1997 (taking over from Christine Lavin), has long been a respected champion of folk music — so much so that on February 1 he was inducted into the Folk Alliance International Conference's Folk DJ Hall of Fame. The conference takes place this week in Kansas City, Missouri.

"John Platt's passion, knowledge and commitment to folk music has been on display for decades, and helps explain why the community considers him a steward of the genre," says Rich McLaughlin, WFUV's program director. "Adding a second hour to the show means no more rushing through our 'Sunday Supper'!"

John’s commitment to emerging artists led to the creation of "On Your Radar," a monthly showcase he curates at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. That commitment has inspired the not-for-profit New Folk Initiative and the website newfolk.org as a platform for his on-air and online endeavors within the folk community.

In addition to his longtime work at WFUV, where he retired from his full-time position as communications director in 2018, Platt began his career at WMMR Philadelphia in 1969, programmed WXRT Chicago and WRVR New York, worked at WNEW-FM and WNYC, and produced national radio programs.

Congratulations, John!
