The band Television is synonymous with the start of the legendary punk venue CBGB’s. It was the band’s founders Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell who convinced the club’s owner, Hilly Crystal, to let bands play there live under the premise that they would build a stage for bands to play on.
Television was never a mass commercial success but Tom Verlaine maintains steadfast status as a musician’s musician and an influence on countless bands of multiple genres.
When he died in 2022, his wish was for no memorial. His longtime bandmates chose instead to let the world remember Verlaine through his music, some of which has never been performed live.
TMOTV (The Music of Tom Verlaine) was born and had its nascent performance last month. The band is comprised of Jimmy Rip (guitar, of Television and The Tom Verlaine Band), Jay Dee Daugherty (drummer for Patti Smith Group, Tom Verlaine Band), Jackson Smith (Patti Smith Band), and Chris Lightcap (bassist for Nels Cline Consentrik Quartet).
Jimmy Rip will be my guest on "Shocking Blue" tonight at 9 p.m. and he's regale us with stories and we’ll listen to a lot of the music of Tom Verlaine.
That's "Shocking Blue," Saturdays from 8-11 p.m. on 90.7FM, streaming online, and in the Archives after broadcast.
