Quinn Continues to Lead the Democrats, And Thereby the Republicans, Poll Finds

Democratic candidates gain widespread support in New York City, according to a new poll.

Despite having lost a few percentage points, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn leads New York City's Democratic mayoral candidates, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday.

Quinn has 25 percent of the vote, which is slightly down from her 28 percent position in April. Anthony Weiner, who only officially announced his candidacy Wednesday morning, is in second place with 15 percent of the vote. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former Comptroller William Thompson are tied for third place with 10 percent each.

The poll found that if Joseph Lhota, the former Metropolitan Transportation Authority chair, wins the Republican nomination, 13 percent of voters are more likely to vote for him in the general election as opposed to the 61 percent who are more likely to vote for the Democratic candidate.

Most people reportedly said they would not vote for Police Commissioner Ray Kelly if he decided to run for mayor as an independent candidate.

"Can we color New York City blue and throw away the crayons?" Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement. "At this stage of the mayoral campaign, none of the non-Democrats -- the popular police commissioner, the Republican or the independent -- lays a glove on the Democrats."
