NYC Volunteers Respond to High Demand for Coats

Volunteers hope to collect an unprecedented number of coats this year for people in need.

New York Cares, the city's largest volunteer organization, will distribute 1,500 coats at the Far Rockaways Library in Queens on Tuesday. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, many residents are still without power.

Steve Streicher works with the organization and says there's a higher demand for coats this year.

"Our original goal was 100,000 coats but now we've doubled it to 200,000 coats," he says, "The demand is immense, we're getting calls every day. We need people to donate immediately and we need people to keep donating."

New Yorkers can donate coats all over the city in any public library, NYPD precinct, and transportation hubs like Grand Central and Penn Station.

The coat drive will run until December 31 with distribution events happening all over the city.
