NY AG and Comptroller Team Up To Fight Corruption
Attorney General will have power to prosecute public officials in cases referred by the State Comptroller's office.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli have agreed to establish a joint task force to root out public corruption in New York State.
The accord gives the Attorney General power to criminally prosecute public officials in cases referred by the State Comptroller.
Russ Haven of the New York Public Interest Research Group said it's refreshing to see the new partnership, "I think New Yorkers will be appreciative of this approach because of the parade of stories of indictments and convictions seems to be non-ending, and to have a new team walking the ethics beat is welcome news."
But, Kelly Williams, general counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice added "as positive sign as this is, I don't think people should sit back on their heels and breathe a sigh of relief here, we still very much need broad based ethics reform legislation in New York State."
