Every Sunday kids meet at Rockaway Beach for free surf lessons. They're hosted by Brooklyn Surf Club, an organization founded in 2023 looking to obtain non-profit status. The club attracts young New Yorkers from all over the city. Many of them have never surfed before, and some don't even know how to swim, but the club's founder, Niels Neudecker, says they're well equipped to teach them. Brooklyn Surf Club will eventually move to a system where surfers' parents provide their tax statements and are then required to pay what they can afford -- some won't pay at all, others will pay partial rates, and the rest will pay in full.
