New York City Announces Water Tracking System

A new water tracking system is helping keep New Yorker's cash from going down the drain.

The city's Department of Environmental Protection is in the final stages of installing a system of wireless meter readers.

Mayor Bloomberg said they will provide residents with minute-by-minute data about their water usage. "That's a huge contrast to the old system of once reading water meters every few months."

Bloomberg said the new system will help homeowners detect water leaks and better understand their daily usage of water.

The city has invested $252 million in the system, which is slated to be completely installed by January 2012.
