New Section of Brooklyn Bridge Park Opens
Pier 5 has multi-purpose sports fields.
New Yorkers and tourists now have a new reason to visit Brooklyn Bridge Park. Today Mayor Bloomberg opened Pier 5, a section of the park with three sports fields and a picnic area.
Two of the fields can be combined to form a regulation-sized soccer field and one field can be divided for youth soccer matches.
Bloomberg says other sections of the park are still under construction and should be open next year.
"As huge a success as Brooklyn Bridge park has been, its brightest days are still ahead," he says, "Today's opening is another big step forward."
The park uses environmentally friendly material wherever possible and is built to withstand sever weather.
Squibb Park Bridge, a foot-bridge connecting Brooklyn Heights to the park will open in the next few weeks. Bloomberg says the bridge will make it easier for residents to access the park.
Pier 5 is now open to the public but the park's electrical system is still down because of Superstorm Sandy. Since the lights don't work, the park won't be open at night.
