New Poll: Weiner Leads Democrats, But Thompson Would Win Runoff

Expert says Weiner scandals may help draw needed attention to election, candidates.

A new Quinnipiac University poll shows that if Democratic mayoral candidate Bill Thompson can make it to the runoff election, he would beat both Anthony Weiner and Christine Quinn. Weiner leads the Democrats with 26 percent of the vote, followed by Quinn with 22 percent and Thompson with 20 percent. But in a runoff scenario, Thompson bests Weiner and Quinn, 52 to 41 percent.

Fordham University political science professor Christina Greer hopes that the news cycle of the past few hours will draw New Yorkers to focus on the race.

"The fact that [Weiner] has been on the front page of every single newspaper will hopefully get people pulled into the spectacle, and hopefully they'll stay for the substance and really start thinking about the kind of mayor they want," Greer said.
