Mayor Bloomberg Talks Up Plans To Open Graduate School Of Engineering

City officials want to make New York a center for technology start-ups.

On his weekly WOR radio show this morning, Mayor Bloomberg reiterated the city's desire to make New York a center of engineering and technology.

Officials are searching across the globe, to places as far as Israel, to find a partner in building a graduate school of engineering in the city. They say New York has fallen behind metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Boston, which are hot-spots for new technology-based start ups.

"We're in a constant battle. We're in a competition with cities across the globe. You can't just sit back and say 'We're New York' anymore", said Mayor Bloomberg. Officials are considering sites such as the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Roosevelt Island for campus locations. The city's capital contribution to the plan could top $100 million.
