Largest Long Island School District Expands Anti-Bullying Program
Brentwood School District has expanded its program to all 17 of its schools.
Brentwood School District in Suffolk County announced today its launching its program against cyber bullying to all 18,000 of its students.
The students will receive training in the classroom on the dangers of bullying. This includes videos, speakers, and role-playing exercises to cut back on bullying in person and online. Last year the program only reached 5 out of 17 of its schools.
New York State Senator Phil Boyle joined the district for the announcement. He says the program came about after suicides in Long Island were linked to cyber-bullying.
"I think we need to proect our children," Boyle said. "There's no better way of doing it then to make sure that they're not bullied, whether it's on the playground or online. We do not want the next tragic situation to occur in New York State."
According to a Department of Justice study, forty-three percent of teenagers have reported experiencing cyber-bullying, and a third say they've been bullied in school.
