Jill Sobule: Sunday Breakfast Session 2009

After Jill Sobule tragically passed away on May 1, I checked to see if I had any of our surviving conversations in my own archives. Lo, I found this long-ago "Sunday Breakfast" segment that was unlike any conventional kiss-and-tell conversation that I'd had with her.
During this 2009 chat and guest DJ segment with me, she played songs about California and New York (e.g., Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Lou Reed) because that's what her life was like, shuttling between both states.
Jill framed the California-New York pairing with live performances of "San Francisco," from her then-new album, 2009's California Years, and "Jetpack" found on 2004' s Underdog Victorious. For many years I dreamed of having Jill to talk about her life, but we just enjoyed many close-to-vest interviews and live sets before audiences.
I also had the chance to see Jill's musical, F*ck 7th Grade, in 2022 — and took this photo that I treasure with Jill and my wife Sheila, above.
Jill was always true to herself, and that was good enough for everybody.
