The Guggenheim Foundation Celebrates An Anniversary

As the city digs out from under the snow, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep New Yorkers occupied. One of them is the Guggenheim, which this year is celebrating an anniversary. Eighty years ago, Solomon R. Guggenheim established his eponymous foundation. Two years later, the forerunner to today's iconic New York City landmark, the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, opened its doors.

The museum is commemorating the anniversary with a new exhibit. It's called "Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim." Visitors can see paintings from throughout the foundation's collection: from Alexander Calder to Pablo Picasso. Vasily Kandinsky gets his own section of the exhibit for his contributions to the collection, and special relationship with the Guggenheim Family.

This was Karibi Whyte's first time visiting the museum. He likes to paint portraits, and figured today was an extra special day to visit the new exhibit.

"What I really like about the building is the architecture," says Whyte. "I never really thought about coming inside to see the artwork. Today's my birthday, so I decided: you know what? I'll walk inside, see what's in there. You might discover something."

The exhibit runs until September 6th.
