Governor Cuomo announced today 500,000 street lights across New York state will be updated to LED technology by 2025.

It's part of an initiative by the governor to cut greenhouse gas emissions and save energy in New York.

Cuomo's office says the Smart Street Lighting NY Program will reduce energy consumption and save taxpayers $87 million annually.

"This modernization program will help save taxpayer money, increase energy efficiency, and increase public safety through increased visibility," Gov. Cuomo said.

The New York Power Authority will lead the initiative with the Department of Public Service, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the Department of Environmental Conservation and other state agencies.

Gov. Cuomo wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New York 40 percent by 2030, based on 1990 levels.
