Google Will Provide Space for New Cornell Tech School
A new partnership between Google and Cornell will get the university's new tech school off the ground sooner than expected.
Mayor Bloomberg, Google's CEO, and the President of Cornell announced today Google will offer students 22,000 square feet in its New York headquarters until the tech campus on Roosevelt Island is completed.
Mayor Bloomberg says the project is important for keeping the city competitive.
"Today we're second only to Silicon Valley as a tech center and we don't like to be second to anybody. Google and Cornell NYC Tech are seriously going to help us close that gap."
Bloomberg says New York City's public schools will also benefit from the partnership. Starting next year, Cornell NYC Tech will train hundreds of public school teachers and 10,000 students. According to Bloomberg, math and science teachers often lack the training needed to be effective.
"One of the things we all talk about is that math and science are so important, everybody agress. Yet, unfortunately a lot of our public school teachers come out of teachers' colleges where they don't take math and science courses."
Google will open its doors to students in the fall and will provide the space free of charge for up to five and a half years.
