The First Openly Gay Black Elected Official Opens Up

The LGBTQ Community is widely represented in politics across the country today, but it wasn't always that way. As part of WFUV's Stonewall 50 coverage, I talked with the first openly gay black person to ever be elected into public office.

Keith St. John told me about the challenges he faced when he came out in the 1980s and the hurtles he had to get over to relate to his colleagues.

To hear more about Keith St. John's story, listen to WFUV's Stonewall 50 documentary.
