Final Phase of the High Line Park Begins
New York City officals broke ground on the High Line Park's third and final section Thursday.
The new addition is estimated to cost $90 million and extend the elevated railway a half mile. Chair of the New York City Planning Commision, Amanda Burden, said the park is a fundamental part of public space in the Big Apple.
"It's an amazing experience, allowing New Yorkers to walk all the way through the Hudson Park and Boulevard all the way to Times Square," said Burden.
The project will add new park space from 30th and 34th streets overlooking the Hudson Rail Yards. Mayor Bloomberg said the High Line has already had a tremendous impact on the West Side's development, and the new extension will only enhance that impact.
"New building permits in the immediate vicinity doubled, bringing more than $2 billion in private investment and added 12,000 jobs. West Chelsea and the Meatpacking District have welcomed new residences, hotels, galleries, and shops"
The new section will be temporarily open to the public during the first two weeks of October. Construction on the final phase is expected to be finished by 2014.
