Teresa Mateus is the grants and programs coordinator at The Kota Alliance. Her organization works to provide free art classes, yoga, and advocacy workshops in order to, as Mateus explained, “empower and support the wellness and health of women, girls, and gender non-conforming folks in New York City.”

The non-profit, situated in Sugar Hill, Harlem, makes all of its classes and programs free.

“There is an option to donate,” Mateus explained. “But we want to make sure that it’s accessible and available to everybody in the community.”

The Kota Alliance is the subject of our non-profit spotlight this week for our public service Strike a Chord campaign. This quarter, WFUV News is highlighting local organizations dedicated to bringing health and fitness to their communities in the New York tri-state area.

This interview ran on the What’s What podcast from WFUV News on June 9, 2025.
