East River Ferry Opens to Public

The first twelve days of service will be free of charge for all riders.

New Yorkers are welcoming new ferry services between Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.

New York Waterway’s East River Ferry connects at 34th Street in Manhattan, Pier 11 near Wall Street, Long Island City in Queens, and several spots in Brooklyn, including Williamsburg.

The double-decker ferry will operate year round from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM on weekdays, and 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM on weekends.  The ferries will operate every half an hour, and every 20 minutes during rush hour.

The vessels are capable of transporting 149 passengers while also providing bike racks for commuters to store their bikes for a $1.00 surcharge.

Brooklynite Edmund Michalefki said the new service will help commuters avoid jam-packed subways and buses, “It’s going to help people with transportation, going to or from, and let’s hope that it continues for many years.”

The ferry service is free now through June 24th. After that, a one-way ride will cost $4.00 and a monthly unlimited ridership pass will cost $140.00.
