DEP Re-Launches "Clean Streets = Clean Beaches"...
New York City's Department of Environmental Protection is re-launching its "Clean Streets = Clean Beaches" campaign with the help of local youths.
A hundred teens and young adults will be hired from the Summer Youth Employment program to work on the DEP's project, which seeks to educate the public on how street litter can end up city beaches via storm drains.
The youths will keep the beaches clean while also informing beach-goers to keep litter off the streets. DEP Commissioner Carter Strickland says it's up to New Yorkers to take care of their beaches.
Strickland says, "At the end of the day, if they (New Yorkers) want to enjoy a clean beach, they have to keep the streets clean."
This is not the DEP's first Clean Beaches initiative, but it is the first time they're working with the Summer Youth Employment Program
