Coalition Lays Out Sandy Rebuilding Plans for Next NYC Mayor

A coalition of New Yorkers, including labor unions and environmental organizations, is laying out post-sandy priorities for the next mayor.

 

The Alliance for a Just Rebuilding presented their 4-point plan outside City Hall on Wednesday. It calls for better jobs, affordable housing, sustainable energy, and community engagement in Sandy rebuilding.

 

Tyquan Carter lives in an area of Red Hook, Brooklyn hard-hit by Sandy. He performed a rap to explain how the storm affected him:

 

Hurricane Sandy

This is what I got to say.

I'm hungry, I need to eat

We had no lights, no heat.

Seeing suffering, adults crying

Restore Red Hook, we still trying.

 

The coalition stressed the importance of involving the public housing community in Sandy rebuilding plans.

 

Vernell Robinson lives in  the Rockaways, where her public housing development was damaged by the storm. She says the new mayor should make public housing a priority.

 

“Now is the time for the city and this new mayor to take advantage of whatever money that is coming in, to use it viably to really put some equality into the system, so that everybody is getting a fair and a decent place to live,” Robinson said.
