CMJ Showcase Wrap-Up
I'm still on a pretty big high after our first ever CMJ showcase tonight at The Living Room for WFUV and The Alternate Side. CMJ is all about musical discovery and our showcase echoed that sentiment.
The night began with a young artist from Copenhagen who goes by Indians. He is set to release his debut record in the new year and gave a taste of what we can expect from him in the future. Armed with a keyboard (or two?) and an acoustic guitar, he engaged the crowd with his set. The best way I can describe his music is "beautifully cool." It was indeed.
Next was Brooklyn's Savoir Adore. The band just released their new album Our Nature today and played a handful of the new songs. From the first note, they owned the room getting the crowd to move and dance. At one point, there even seemed to be some sort of synchronized arm raise from the band and, in turn, some of the audience. The band was in tremendous form and were having a great time playing for a packed (Living) room.
New York trip-hop veterans Wax Poetic then took over. The band has been playing NYC for a decade and a half and proved why they have lasted so long. Their set was confident and capable, led by the smooth voice of Sissy Clemens. They certainly made some new fans with songs from their new album On a Ride. I've got a feeling longtime fans dug their set, too.
Last on the bill was the young Dublin band Little Green Cars. The band's members don't eclipse the age of 20, but they've been playing together for several years already. The Living Room crowd got a good feel as to why the New York Times called them one of the six bands to watch at CMJ. The band's melodies soared, as did their FIVE-part harmonies. An impressive showing and one that proved why there is so much buzz on this band.
All in all, just a tremendous night of live music. Thanks to all who came out to see the show, all of the bands that played, The Living Room, and TuneIn.
If you missed it, fear not! We'll broadcast highlights of our CMJ showcase this Thursday from 9-11a on 91.5 and again this Friday night on The Alternate Side on FUV from 10pm-midnight.
