Chris Smither: 2018

Chris Smither is an American treasure. Now well into his fifth decade as a performer, the Louisiana-born, Massachusetts-based Smither is very much at the top of his game these days. While he's sometimes referred to as an acoustic bluesman, Smither says, "People who listen to the blues probably say I'm a guy who's listened to the blues." That is to say, there's a lot more than just blues in his songs.

His new release, Call Me Lucky, his 18th studio album and the first of original songs in six years, is rich in maturity and musical depth. Working with Dave Goodrich and other long-time sidemen, Smither transported Team Smither from Boston to Austin for the sessions. I'm grateful he returned to WFUV to share the results in this "Sunday Supper" session.
