Bronx Museum Exhibit Focuses on the AIDS Crisis

This summer, the Bronx Museum of the Arts is presenting the first exhibit that examines the influence of the AIDS crisis on American art and culture.

The Bronx was deeply affected by the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s having one of the highest numbers of people affected by the virus.

“There was always a little bit of stigma and taboo, and because of that, many people in the community have difficulty to speak about the subject. I thought this exhibition would offer a great platform to actually have this discussion,” says Bronx Museum Director of Curatorial and Education Programs, Sergio Bessa.

The exhibition runs from July 13 to September 25 and features over 125 works dating from 1981 to present day. Featured artists include Félix González-Torres, Derek Jackson, Kia Labeija, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Martin Wong. Admission to the museum is free.
