Hear songs and stories from soul survivor Bettye LaVette.

Underdog soul singer Bettye LaVette has been crafting her own kind of songbook for 50 years now, and she's brought all her talent and experience to bear on two new projects: her memoir, A Woman Like Me, and an album, called Thankful N' Thoughtful.

The new album continues a thread we heard on LaVette's Grammy-nominated 2010 project, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, but instead of interpreting songs from across the pond, Bettye now explores the work of Tom Waits, Sly Stone, Patty Griffin, The Black Keys and more. The album and the book are out next week, so enjoy hearing (and seeing) a few of the songs performed live, with some funny and fascinating conversation mixed in.
