Antonio Guterres' First 100 Days as UNSG

Today is Antonio Guterres' hundredth day as Secretary-General of the United Nations. Guterres faced the most public Secretary-General election in the UN's history. As the former High Commissioner for Refugees, Guterres is a weathered UN diplomat and generally well-liked within the system. But I asked a few foreign policy experts what they think he can do better.

Angela Wells is the Communications Officer for the Institute of Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University.  She said she liked Guterres' focus on conflict prevention.  But, she thought he needed to give more attention to protecting aid workers in conflict zones.

"Once humanitarian aid workers lose access, the whole response can collapse," she said.

But Dr. Melissa Labonte, a United Nations expert, said Guterres and the Trump administration need to focus on common interests, such as holding peacekeeping to a higher standard.

"The U.S. has its own agenda, but there are some overlapping interests with Guterres’ agenda. And those interests really need to be identified and emphasized by Guterres in a new way. He’s got to frame them in a way where he convinces the Trump administration that he’s their ally, not their opponent," Labonte said.

One thing's for sure - there'll be no lack of world issues for Guterres to address in his next hundred days.
