Ads For Unhealthy Foods Disproportionately Found In Low-Income Bronx Neighborhoods

Dr. Sean Lucan of the Montefiore Health System has released a study showing ads for unhealthy foods were more likely to be found in the subway stations of minority and low-income neighborhoods in the Bronx. The study also found that a higher number of ads for unhealthy foods was associated with higher rates of diabetes and hypertension.

Lucan said advertisers spend a lot of money to directly target certain neighborhoods."There's reasonable evidence that suggests ads shape behavior and I think the advertisers pay a premimum to set ads in communities because they think they're going to turn a profit," Lucan said.

Lucan said he hopes the study can be used by these communities to make their neighborhoods healthier.
