AAA Study Finds New Car Infotainment Systems Distract Drivers

New car technologies that allow users to send text messages, place calls, and even surf the web using voice commands can be a convenience for drivers. While meant to prevent drivers from using handheld devices, these systems can still draw attention away from the roads. A new AAA study finds that car infotainment systems can dangerously distract drivers. Even a two-second distraction can double the risk of a crash. AAA spokesman Robert Sinclair says these new technologies turn cars into rolling smartphones.

"People think being behind the wheel is downtime and that somehow you are able to do other things when you are driving. Driving in and of itself is multitasking," he says.

Sinclair says these systems should be disabled while cars are in motion until manufacturers can find a way to simplify them. I'm Megan Pinna, WFUV news.
