Elevator Music Going Down?

Muzak, the company that brings you elevator music, filed for bankruptcy protection yesterday. It’s another case of too much debt and too few assets.

Will you ever again groove to the vibraphone version of “My Humps” as you ascend to that meeting on the 14th floor? Will you ever catch yourself humming along to “Lost in the Supermarket” as you stock up on toilet paper in aisle 7? Just what will be your soundtrack as you pretend to read last September’s National Geographic in Dr. Welby’s waiting room?

These are questions we dare not ask, if we value our sanity. Without Muzak we would have not our sanity, but the madness of uncomfortable silences.
