Roo Part Deux

Roo Checkin Part Deux -

Echoing Rita’s sentiments about the MMJ show - It really was amazing. They were supposed to play until 3 but they rocked it till like 4. They tore it up on Run Thru & Lay Low, two of my favorite songs, and then they did some Kool and the Gang that made me get down on it. And then they closed with special guest - comedian ZaK Galifinakis - coming out dressed as little orphan Annie to perform the Motley Crew song - Home Sweet Home. It was hysterical. Oh and I also wanted to mention that I beyond impressed with the Jim James rock slide. He runs with his guitar, drops to his knees - slides - all the while wailing on his guitar - its really something special.

Today’s rundown: Saw a bit of Donvan Frankenreiter - Fun & Jammy, Mason Jennings - very good show - Love his voice, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - You KNOW they bring it. Sharon Jones a sight to behold - her albums are great but they don’t hold a candle to seeing her live - she is so high energy - a modern day female James Brown - and Girl can Dance! She has this one song where she starts listing all the different dances that she grew up doing - the watusi, the mashed potato, the jerk - etc and I really wish that dancing crazes were still in vogue today like they were back then.

And then there was Gogol Bordello - the insane gypsy band that is nonstop excitement - I really thought the lead guy was going to breath fire and a dancing bear wearing a tutu would come out at some point but alas it fell just short of that. It was an intense experience - they had separate people to bang big drums and cymbals and there were horns and guitars and funny pants - extreemely pale eastern european dude with a moustache that would make most men jealous. They make a very big and fast, upbeat sound and they are all about theatrics. Again this is another instance where the live show is quite an experience.

Also, Saw some Ben Folds - he was getting really funky with the electronics. Saw Iron and Wine - waaaay mellow set. For me he is the opposite of sharon jones - I prefer the album - just because the live experience is a little too low key for me.

Pearl Jam headlines tonight - Jack johnson is on now and I’m having a serious problem trying to figure out what to do for late night - there is the hip hop route - w/ lupe fiasco and Kanye, Talib Kweli, Chromeo etc And then there is Ghostland Observatory and Sigur Ros. Not sure what Im gonna do yet. I’ll let you know how this all plays out.
