To Cringe or Nor to Cringe
Cringe-worthy? Yes!
I’ll never forget the first time Rita Houston came to my house and eyed my record collection. She smiled while remarking that I had a LOT of old Kenny Loggins. At the time, I wasntt quite hip enough to realize I probably should have gotten rid of those old records; Kenny touched a lot of hearts but clearly doesn’t qualify as cool.
We all have our guilty pleasures, but I still have a hard time understanding which ones I’m supposed to keep private. I know I’m not supposed to like Peter Frampton, but what about Boz Scaggs? Am I hopelessly un-hip because I love James Taylor? What about Prince? He’s in my IPOD and everybody hits the dance floor when I play him at a dance party. But just look at the comments here on the ‘FUV blog under “Overrated.†I’ll grant you that he’s uneven, but you can’t deny that he can be brilliant. Same for Rufus Wainwright. This blog has helped me understand that many don’t agree… but I’d really rather not feel bad because I think that voice sound like a cello. (Plus, he LOOKS fabulous!)
Then there’s the music I USED to love, but haven’t really listened to in years like Loggins, Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Sting, Genesis, etc. Come on, it might be Fun to hear Abacab!
I think if there’s anything I feel truly guilty about, it’s the many great artists who don’t get airplay on FUV. As I always say: so many artists, so little time!
Anyway, I’m gonna let it all hang out on the air Wednesday. Please be Gentle!
