Transgender Doll Unveiled At The New York City Toy Fair
What's said to be the world's first transgender doll was unveiled at the New York City Toy Fair this weekend. It's modeled off transgender teen Jazz Jennings. Jennings is the star of her own reality TV show, I Am Jazz. She has also published several books, including "I Am Jazz" and "Being Jazz: My Life As A Transgender Teen."
Robert Tonner is the founder of the Tonner Doll Company, which makes the Jazz Jennings Doll. He expects the doll to retail for $90. Tonner thinks that making a transgender doll will help kids who are transgender feel more included.
"I think a kid who is struggling with this should be able to walk into a toy store and find a doll that represents their story," says Tonner.
Mara Keisling is the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. She says despite the price, the new doll will do a great deal for transgender representation.
"It's true that most kids can't afford a $90 doll, but they know it exists," says Keisling. "They know that Jazz is being acknowledged, and that means that transgender kids are being acknowledged."
The Jazz Jennings Doll is expected to go on sale by next fall.
