Titanic: NYC Burial Sites

This weekend marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The ship was on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York when it hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Many victims and survivors of Titanic rest right here in New York City.

Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx is the resting place of twelve victims and survivors of the Titanic disaster. Including the millionaire founder of Macy's Department Store, Isidor Strauss and his wife Ida. Both perished in the tragedy. Dr. J Joseph Edgette is a titanic scholar who's writing a book about Titanic passengers and their burial sites. He said Isidor's body was recovered, but his wife's was not.

"Isidor is buried under a beautiful Egyptian funeral barge and his wife's name is there also. But for her that monument becomes a cenotaph, and a cenotaph is a monument that we erect in memory of someone who's body is not there," he said.

Edgette will be giving a tour of Woodlawn Cemetery on April 29th. Meanwhile Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery is home to nine Titanic victims and survivors.
