Spring Cleaning: Flea Market
This time of year many New Yorkers are jumpstarting spring cleaning efforts and decluttering their lives. The Church of St. Joan of Arc in Jackson Heights, Queens hosts an annual spring flea market.
There are rows of wooden tables vendors have rented inside the church gymnasium. Each table is full of antique jewelry, porcelain statues, and other kick knacks. Marci Gaitan is one of the many sellers preparing for the warmer weather by clearing unwanted objects from her house to sell. She says her more unusual items bring customers to her table. As she holds up a silver studded bra, she starts swaying and dancing. This piece was a lookalike bra Madonna wore on tour in 1990.
Gaitan also offered some advice to fellow spring cleaners on what sells well during the season. She says, "In the spring, you want to bring spring things like hats for the sun because summer is coming. But, jewelry always does well though."
Gaitan says she and her neighbors sell at St. Joan of Arc's every spring. She says it's a great way to get rid of her junk and raise funds for the church.
