Some NYC Young Adults Getting Summer Jobs

City's Summer Youth Employment Program gives some students spending money.

Almost 32,000 New York City young adults will once again have the opportunity to work for the city this summer.

The Summer Youth Employment Program places 14 to 24 year olds with various organizations, like the Queens Botanical Garden. School Chancellor Dennis Walcott was part of the program back in the 1960's.

"The ability to work with people who I did not know, to interact, to learn how to follow orders, learn how to do things no matter how menial they may be, was an invaluable opportunity for me to learn, to grow, and become a productive adult," he said.

Participants were selected through a lottery system, and the program lasts seven weeks. Mayor Bloomberg says the initiative is a great learning experience.

"It's like skiing, you can read a book on skiing, but you got to go put some miles under your skis if you're going to learn how to ski," he said, "The same thing is true with working, you have to get out there and actually do something and see how people interact."

According to a study from New York University, high school students with summer jobs are more likely to do better in school.
