Report: Social Media Companies Need to Better Monitor Terrorism, Hate Accounts

Some social media companies are better than others at policing terrorist propaganda and hate speech. That's according to a new report by the New York City Comptroller's Office.

The report said Facebook ranks the highest in effectively monitoring and eliminating accounts that promote terrorism. But other sites, like YouTube, received a much lower score. Researcher Rick Eaton said there's a number of tutorials on YouTube that encourage homegrown terrorism.

"Making your own grenades, electronic detenators, how to make a homemade flamethrower, how to make your own napalm," said Eaton as he named a few.

And Eaton said these accounts aren't only promoting terrorism on YouTube. You can also find similar ones on Twitter and Instagram. And Rabbi Abraham Cooper, who led the study, says social media companies need to do a better job filtering hateful messages.

"The internet companies did not create hate," said Cooper. "But I don't think any of them really came into business to be a sounding board for extremism."

The report also listed Reddit and SoundCloud as sites that need to ramp up their monitoring efforts.
