NYPD To Test Body Cameras on Officers

New York City's police department is taking steps to improve its relationship with the public.
The NYPD's launching a pilot program that will require police officers to wear body cameras.

Mayor De Blasio says three police units will don the cameras for three months starting this Friday. He says it's a much-needed step to make the NYPD more transparent.

"For the last year and this, we've spoken continuously about the need to bring police and community together, keep the city safe, and also deepen the partnership between police and the community," he said.

The mayor says recording police interactions with the community from the officer's point of view will have many benefits.

"It's going to improve the work of law enforcement," he said.  "And, God forbid, when something goes wrong, we're going to have a clearer understanding of what happened, and whatever approaches we need to take as a result."

DeBlasio says three aditional units will recieve body cameras in the near future. He says the city will then evaluate the success of the pilot program to determine if all NYPD officers should wear them.
