NYC Opens Urban Technology Innovation Center

A new technology center will promote green building technologies in New York City.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched a new technology center today, which aims to promote green building practices in the region.

The New York City Urban Technology Innovation Center brings together academic institutions, technology companies and building owners to test out new green energy developments, from building materials to heat conservation methods. The center is a partnership between the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Columbia University, Polytechnic Institute of New York University, and the City University of New York.

The mayor said the center will connect "green pioneers" to real estate developers and building owners. "Right now, there aren't enough connections between these groups. So neither is fully aware of the opportunities the other has to offer."

The mayor said the center will create jobs and promote green building in the city. The initative is part of the city's PlanNYC, which began in 2006 to reduce climate-changing pollution in the city.
