NYC Lawmaker Wants to Keep Hookah Out of Sight and Out of Mind

A study by the National Cancer Institute and the FDA says teens are less likely to buy tobacco and hookah products when they're not on window display.

That's why City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez announced legislation that would keep those products hidden under the counter until a sale is made. He says because hookah can damage lungs, stores should not market the product from their windows in a way that entices teens.

"It is unnaceptable to see our youth on the streets smoking hookah," said Rodriguez.

According to the CDC, smoking hookah is more dangerous than smoking cigarettes. That's because a typical hour-long hookah session requires approximately 200 puffs, while the average cigarette requires around 20.
