North Hempstead Brings Back Tick-Fighting Quail

Long Island's North Hempstead is forgoing pesticides in their fight against ticks, instead they will be welcoming a flock of new residents to fight off the parasites.

For the second year in a row North Hempstead has hatched and raised Northern Bobwhite Quail with a mission in-mind.

Forty-eight of these little birds will be put to task eating ticks along Hempstead Harbor Trail and 200 acres of nearby land.

Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth says they are reintroducing the species to Long Island, where they stopped being common years ago.

Residents watched the quail hatch in early June on North Hempstead's online quail cam.

Now birds will be released into the world as adolescents...and local celebrities.
