New York City Officials Stand Up to Trump
New York City officials are voicing their concerns after President Trump signed two executive orders yesterday that will tighten border security and crack down on undocumented immigrants. The orders are the first step to building a wall between the US and Mexico, and the measures would also cut off funding to sanctuary cities like New York, where local leaders don't enforce federal immigration laws.
"These executive orders would translate into real hurt in the streets of the Bronx and throughout the United States," Congressman Adriano Espaillat said.
Espaillat said he is also concerned about some actions being taken by the Republican-dominated Congress.
"They're fast-tracking an agenda to instill hate and fear in our communities, and we will fight tooth and nail because we feel that's un-American," he said.
In a report released yesterday, Comptroller Scott Stringer said New York City could lose roughly $7 billion if Trump cuts funding.
