New York City Officials Court Top Democrats
New York City officials are continuing their bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Brooklyn.
The official selection process for the next convention began today at the Barclay's center, where the event would be held. City officials and Senator Charles Schumer led Democratic leaders on a tour of the arena. City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito says Brooklyn is the ideal place for Democrats to select their next presidential candidate.
"New York has the right story to tell. That's because Brooklyn's story is America's story," she said.
Political conventions are generally held in swing states. But New York is a blue state, so some Democrats are asking whether holding the convention in solidly liberal Brooklyn will alienate on-the-fence voters. Senator Schumer says that doesn't matter.
"You win elections these days by appealing to the voters. The best way to appeal to the voters in America--they want a bright future," said Schumer.
Governor Cuomo also supports the city's proposal to host the 2016 convention.
