A New Urban Farm Sprouts at Battery Park

A turkey shaped urban farm opens at Battery Park.

An opening ceremony was held Monday for Battery Park's first urban farm.

It's an acre-long community garden where local restaurants, students and residents will tend to one the farm's eighty plots.

The idea for the urbam farm came after some local high school students asked to plant a vegetable garden in the area.  Millenium High School student, Suji Kim, said the farm will help students get more involved in their neighborhood.  "It's really awesome that our school finally can give back to the community...I mean it's nice to have this kind of inspiration and this kind of impact on the community," Kim said.

The unusual design was inspired by the park's most famous resident, a wild turkey named Zelda.  The farm will stay in place until the end of next year.
