Morning Brief: September 30
Yesterday morning, a large crowd gathered at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Montclair, New Jersey. Those assembled (who included, among their number, such figures as Rudy Giuliani and Derek Jeter) were all there for one reason: to pay their last respects to iconic Yankee player Yogi Berra. Berra died last week at 90, and though he was most famous for his Hall of Fame baseball career, he is being remembered as something more. As former Yankees manager Joe Torre put it, Berra was “so good and so honest and so real and so human.” He is survived by his three sons, eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
