Morning Brief: February 22

432 Park

New York City’s skyscrapers are likely to keep getting taller and taller—whether residents like it or not. One of the city’s more notable recent additions, located at 432 Park Ave., has been widely mocked and by many New Yorkers for its proportions: a staggering 1,396 feet tall, but only about 93 feet wide on each side. But these proportions may well be the new norm. Engineers say advances in high-strength building materials, coupled with the city’s rapidly shrinking plots of available land, means buildings like 432 Park are simply more lucrative than more traditional skyscrapers.
