New Protections for Long Island Lighthouse

New designation means more protection.

The U.S. Department of the Interior has decided to designate a 200 year old lighthouse on eastern Long Island as a National Historic Landmark. It took more than six years for the Montauk Point Lighthouse to obtain the designation.

Richard White with the Montauk Historical Society said the new status will make it easier to apply for federal funds. He also said it will give the lighthouse top priority for aid in case of a natural disaster.  “If our efforts were to get damaged, the first thing we’d mention is that we’re a landmark status site, which would set us apart from a lot of other history spots” said White.

The lighthouse and museum are closed for the winter, but will re-open on weekends starting March 17th.
