Mayor Speaks on Trump's Executive Orders and New York as a "Sanctuary City"
Earlier this week, President Trump issued an executive order threatening funding to so-called "sanctuary cities" for undocumented immigrants. On WNYC's "The Brian Lehrer Show" this morning, Mayor de Blasio stressed he would not bend to Trump's order.
De Blasio promised to take the federal government to court if President Trump cuts funding to New York. He says to be stricter with undocumented immigrants like Trump wants would not only be unlawful, but also wouldn't make the city any safer. He says undocumneted New Yorkers should not have to fear deportation whenever they have a run-in with the law.
"If you are an undocumented individual who has a small amount of marijuana on you, who went through a stop sign, those individuals we do not want to see torn apart from their families," said Mayor de Blasio.
Trump's executive order says it would exempt cutting money to law enforcement.
