Marathon Runs Big Bucks into NYC

A new report details the economic impact of the 2010 ING New York City marathon.

The ING New York City Marathon is a big money maker for the city.

A new report says the 2010 marathon generated $340 million for the city, and brought in a record $30 million for charities.

But, New York Road Runners President and CEO Mary Wittenberg says the marathon is about much more than dollar signs. "As much as the marathon keeps growing and evolving, it's an event with an amazing heartbeat where we are constantly celebrating the very best of the city and the sport."

"The New York Road Runners impact our economy by brining in millions of dollars through programs that benefit our overall city's health including hundreds of thousands of students in public schools," said Council Member Robert Jackson, Chair of the New York City Council Education Committee.

The study also shows marathon runners spend nearly $1,800 each during their visit to the city.

Last year's marathon drew more than 45,000 participants and 2 million spectactors.
