In New York City, four people have died in a hit-and-run crash in the past two weeks alone. That's why City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez wants to offer rewards for people who give information on drivers who flee the scene. The reward, which could reach $1,000, will be given if the information leads to the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

Rodriguez said there should also be more severe penalties for hit-and-runs and that this could prevent drivers from leaving the scene of a crime.

"We have to send a clear message to drivers," Rodriguez said. "If you hit someone on the street, you can stay and help, or you can flee and be arrested with serious consequences."

Rodriguez is also calling for more officers to be tasked with investigating collisions. He hopes these measures can be enough to slow down the rising numbers of hit-and-runs.

"Hit-and-runs occur with far too great a frequency,' Rodriguez said. "2017 should be the year we say, 'Enough is enough.' "
