Lawmakers and Residents Celebrate Improved Safety in Queens Housing Development

Elected officials and residents are coming together this week to celebrate recent efforts to improve safety at a public housing development in Queens.

The Beach 41st Street Houses has long been a troublesome development.  That's according to Queens Council Member Donovan Richards.

He says the development has a history of violence, and was hit especially hard by Superstorm Sandy.

But Richards says with the help of a re-opened community center and new security cameras, residents finally have something to smile about.

"We've been able to over the last year, with the help of the community, with cameras, with good policing, successfully halt shootings there for over a year now," he said.

Richards says he's looking to improve police-community relations to continue to boost safety in the area.
